What to Do in a Panel Job Interview

Panel interviews are gaining in popularity these days. Why? They save time, since the candidate interviews with everyone at once rather than go through a series of private interviews. Furthermore, they may only involve one or two people who interview him/herself as a panel. If the panel is of five members, then each will have to assess a candidate for the job. This article gives tips and what you should remember while going for a panel interview.

What do they assess?

Usually the panel will be made of three to five members who will be conceivably different from one another. The only consistent aspect of the panel is the person who makes the final decision – the hiring manager. The others may be trained interviewers in the company and the recruiters, or the HR staff may recreation a questionnaire form that will enable you to assess yourself against the person specification.

They will have done a risk assessment, done a preliminary telephone interview, will have noted your strengths and weaknesses and will have allocated an estimated value of the job based on these assessments.

They will have also made a judgement of your suitability for the role. They will have talked to you about your experience and they will have compared your requirements with the person specification they have.

What is their process?

Typically, the recruitment company will set out to find the right person on the basis of the competencies required for the job. They will then advertise the vacancy giving the mode, the date you are required to start and the contact number for the job.

The person to whom the vacancy is presented will usually be the Human Resources Manager of the organization and in many companies, the position may also be advertised internally.

They interview several candidates initially and the pool of applicants is reduced by the number of successful candidates who pass the interview.

The interviews may be conducted over the telephone, in person, using a combination of the two, or the group may split into a dance and then the process is repeated until they have found the right person.

The interviews may be group interviews where you talk to various groups of people, or they may be one-on-one interviews. It may depend on the situation the interview takes place in.

There could also be specialist roles such as Area Expert in the area. The basic skills required for the job may be experience with the relevant area and some formal education.

Sales experience is also an asset.

The job may have a degree of autonomy, in which case an element of flexibility may be desirable. However, autonomy is not always desirable in such a situation as you may not be able to control the decisions being made.

It is always sensible to apply for a job which is the next step in the process of obtaining the necessary qualifications. This is the way to ensure that you get the further steps completed. If you are unsure, speak to the employer and find out what the minimum requirements are.

If you know that you want to work in a particular industry, then concentrate in on the relevant skills required for the job.

Look at the range of jobs listed and see if any of them require a specific set of skills. If yes, then it is worth developing those skills.

Set about developing those skills in an area that you can excel in. The clearer the picture, the more likely you are to get the next step in the process of obtaining the position you desire.

Do not be put off if rough areas in the process still need to be worked on. Ask the employer to say what the next steps are and you will be able to come back to you later in the day and analyses the position from a different perspective.
